I Fagiolini have served a slice of madrigal-based heaven with their latest album of music by John Wilbye - the first album dedicated to the composer since the 1980s. The album is a combination of two recordings, from 2021 and 2014, which have then been compiled to great effect.
The album attracted the attention of the board of the German Record Critics, who are "a collaboration of music critics and journalists from Germany, Austria and Switzerland to recognize outstanding music and spoken word productions."
The album was awarded the Early Music Preis der deutschen Schallplattenkritik in the third quarter of 2022.
Carsten Niemann, for the jury:
“We hope,” say I Fagiolini in the foreword to their CD, “that this first all-Wilbye recording since the eighties will inspire people to sing his madrigals again.” And how it does! But as immediately as the singers create the atmosphere of a private circle of close-knit musicians exchanging stories about their latest love affairs, it is difficult to imagine anyone being able to replicate such feats of intimacy and expressiveness, power, depth, and crystal-clear intonation anytime soon.
