FineSync / Music picture workflow
FineSync enables a video editing workflow where virtually any useful video clip can be placed over the matching point in the music, not the session. Even when that picture came from a different take. FineSync aligns clips automatically using the scratch audio in camera, saving hours of tinkering over long timelines.
Choose the visually strongest take at the musical point. FineSync works out how that clip's guide audio relates to the master, so picture is no longer locked to the take carrying the current soundtrack.
What makes this different?
In a multicam recording, using a clip from another take requires time-consuming manual alignment. With FineSync, you can choose the shot for its framing, expression or movement first, then find the best possible sync to the master audio later.
Pick the most musical shot visually, without worrying that the sync isn't perfect.
FineSync uses MFC based algorithms to find the most accurate sync to the audio master. It does not need timecode, filenames or metadata - just onboard scratch audio.
Different takes at different speeds? FineSync analyses the best sync coefficient at different playback speeds and tells you how much to stretch your clip for the best result.
Export a replaced EDL and associated sync-marker information back into your NLE, with information on how well FineSync thinks it's done, and what you need to do next.
Finesync builds all the associated sync media in memory, never affecting your original recorded files.
The new workflow
Wondering how the workflow looks?
Roughly align all the takes to the master.
Choose the shots you want - from everything you caught.
Finesync reads the first track of video and audio - so just the clips and master audio, please. Export an "EDL with audio".
Pull the corrected EDL into the project and double check any low-confidence clips.
Apply any requested time stretches and you're ready for the next steps.
What comes out
A FineSync output consists of the .EDL timeline with the adjusted clips, ready to be overlaid onto your master audio, and a set of markers in a .csv. Our DVR Import tool aligns the markers to the clips, with analysis on sync performance and suggestions for further processing if necessary.
Same clips, same cuts, but adjusted sync
Colour coded markers for sync accuracy, for easy checking and correction if necessary.
How far has the clip actually been adjusted.
"Speed up the clip by 108% for the best fit." (Percentage TBC)
Under the hood, without the recipe
FineSync looks for useful, musical structure even when the sources have different balances, pitch, noises and edits. It uses a correlation scale to determine success, and only fails below a genuinely poor threshold.
The point is to allow a more creative workflow for both audio and video, and to save the editor time and energy, especially when it would be spent on non-creative, difficult to automate tasks.
To be aware of
This isn't a foolproof system - as with any automation, sometimes FineSync gets it wrong. We're saving you effort and legwork, not replacing an editors eyes and ears. The FineSync workflow needs a final checking pass for any glaring errors; If they exist, they'll certainly be glaring.
Licensing
FineSync is designed to be part of a workflow pipeline - so we're pricing it as an alternative for a number of hours worked on a project. One month of FineSync is the equivalent of 2 hours work at £30ph, where as it may save the editor much longer than that for a big project. I hope this will both save you time, and your clients money.
